How to start a blog in 2022 that will make you money
How I got into blogging
Sitting in my cubicle from 9-5 in the corporate world, I just knew deep down that this life wasn’t for me. I knew there was more out there than this.
One day, I was just aimlessly scrolling through the internet for other jobs that didn’t have me confined to an office. I came across this woman who was a finance blogger who was making $50,000 (yes I typed that correct) a MONTH. A month? That is more than what I make in an entire year. So I dove down into the rabbit hole and read every single thing on her website that had to do with blogging. I then researched blogging even more and found all of these incredible business women who have made writing their full time jobs.
I felt like I could do this. I loved writing and I loved the idea of creating a website that was just mine. I went all in, bought courses, bought my self hosted website, bought my theme. I was so invested mentally, I knew I could succeed at this.
So, now here we are two years later, with two successful blogs under my belt. I’m here to tell you it is possible to create a blog and to make money from it.
Why should you start a blog
There are hundreds of reasons why you might want to start a blog. For me, it was the idea of creating a life for myself that I loved and making money on my own. I wanted to work when I wanted, where I wanted, what I wanted and most importantly I wanted financial freedom.
I am also passionate about what I write about. I love fashion and beauty and home decor! I’m knowledgable enough that I am able to provide my readers the information they are looking for. I also love to write. Sitting down at my laptop and writing a 1,000 page blog post for me is easy and enjoyable. Of course there are always downsides to everything but for me it’s truly what I love to do.
You can make money from anywhere in the world!
All you need to run your blog is a laptop and wifi! That means you can work wherever you want. You don’t have to ask your boss permission to take a two week vacation to Europe. You just go, because you’re your own boss and can work from Paris if you want/ need to. There is so much flexibility with blogging. You are on your own time schedule and pick and choose when you want to put in the work.
I’m going to go through step by step on how to set up your blog. It’s super easy and you’ll have your blog set up in like 20 minutes! So without further ado let’s get started!
1- Come up with a blog niche and blog name
If you’re thinking about starting a blog, then you might already have an idea of what topic you want to write about. If not, now is the time to get your thinking cap on. When it comes to blog topics, there are so many to choose from. In my opinion, I would pick something to write about that I am knowledgeable in, or passionate about.
The cool thing about blogging is it can really be about anything! For example, my blog is about how to live a life you love and make money online. But if you are passionate about gardening it can be about that. Or if you are super knowledgeable in sports, you can write about that.
My advice is to pick a topic and stick with that topic. So, if your blog is about fashion, you don’t want to have random posts about vegan recipes. I would definitely try and keep the topics related. Even better, is to niche down into something more specific.
So if you were thinking about starting a blog about animals, I would maybe niche it down even smaller into pets, or a specific animal like dogs, or wildlife conservation. It honestly will make it less stressful on you. Because when you think about it, there are millions of different animals, and millions of different topics that you can write about inside the subject of animals. So niching down to dogs or even smaller to a breed of dog will make it easier to find your specific audience and also make it less of a burden on you when it comes to writing.
Now once you have your topic, you want to come up with a blog name! This is the part of the website before the dot com. I think this is super important because you’re naming your brand! You of course need it to be original, don’t overcomplicate it, and have it relate to what you’re writing about.
Here you can check if the name of your website is taken or not.
Once you think of a great name for your blog it’s time to move onto the next step!
2- Buying hosting for your blog
If you plan on making money with your blog it’s super important to be self hosted. What is self hosting your asking? Self hosting is when you pay a monthly or yearly price to have your website “hosted” on the Internet. This is one of the only expenses you’ll be paying for when it comes to setting up your blog. And it’s only $2.95 you can’t beat it!
I’ve read countless times how important it is to have a self hosted WordPress blog. You absolutely need this platform to build your website and become to make money from it. Having a free website is NOT the way to go. It will truly hurt you in the long run if you plan on making an income from your website.
I use BlueHost for my websites and I HIGHLY recommend it for all new bloggers. It’s super easy to use, great customer service and I have never had any issues with it. It’s only $2.95 a month, and trust me it is totally worth it!
So first, you want to go to BlueHost.com
Next go up to the top left corner and click on WordPress then WordPress Hosting. It will then take you to this page where you will click on Choose Plan.
Since you are just starting out, the best plan to get is Basic. It comes with everything you need to set up a basic beginner blog.
After that you’ll be sent to a page to choose your domain name. Double check for spelling!
Then you just simply fill out all of your personal information. You can either choose a one-year or three-year plan. This is totally up to you but of course choosing the three-year plan saves you $$ in the long run!
Now you want to uncheck every box except for Domain Privacy + Protection. This is self explanatory, you want to protect all this hard work you’re about to do! .
After you purchase your hosting you will then set up a password for your website.

3- Choosing a theme
The next step is choosing a theme for your blog. There are so many really great free ones that you can use when you are first setting up. A lot of these are easy to use and definitely beginner friendly.
If you want to get a premium blog, one that more suits the look you want to achieve, I highly suggest looking at purchasing ones through Etsy. They have so many that range in price and are so cute.
After that you want to click Launch your Blog and you are then officially up and running!
4- Start creating
Next you want to start churning out content. Keep on writing and putting up high quality blog posts. My favorite tip from someone is just start writing. Everything will fall into place once you are on a roll. But nothing will happen if you don’t at least start.
